Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 October 2023
“My God is the Master of the universe, and nothing happens that He does not know since He neither slumbers nor sleeps”. That is the answer I gave to somebody on Facebook to one who concluded that because of the recent happenings in the world, God had been dethroned. Such person is not alone in that opinion. Some of us tend to think that whenever things are “bad” or there is a disaster, God is not in control.
God’s ways are not our ways, nor His thoughts our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). The Assyrians were used as “the rod of God’s anger” (NLT). They were being used by God to punish Israel, but they failed to see it as that. They thought it an opportunity to add Jerusalem to the nations they had conquered and became proud and arrogant.
We should be very careful about what God uses us to do. Read vs.15-19 to understand why God says in Isaiah 42:8 and 48:11 that He will not share His glory with anyone. We need to recognise the unseen hand of God in everything and not be like the Assyrians. We must resist the temptation to behave like Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:30-33). It is very dangerous to ascribe to ourselves the glory due Him.
